Nadim Tarin Hall

A young Engineering graduate residing in Saudi Arabia, Mr. Nadim Tarin offered to build a Hall of residence for 550 boys at the cost of Rs. 2.4 crores.

Mr. Nadim Tarin, did his Civil Engineering in 1977 from Aligarh Muslim University. He gave away his own hard earned Rs. 2.4 crore to a dream, to an idea, and as repayment of a debt that he felt he owed to his alma mater.

A.M.U. had a history of fund raising drives inviting people to contribute towards the running of the University. After India became independent the total expenditure has been borne by the UGC. Nadeem has created a history after independence to build a hall of residence.

The foundation stone of the Nadeem Tarin Hall was laid by the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Mr. Shafi Qureshi on April 7, 1993.

Mohsinul Mulk Hall (MM Hall)

Nawab Mohsinul Mulk, Mahdi Ali (1837-1907) was one of the brightest stars on Sir Syeds horizon of social reforms. He dedicated himself fully to the cause Sir Syed stood for.

He was born at Etawah (UP) in 1837 and rose from the position of an ordinary clerk to a very high rank in the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad, where he got the title of Mohsinul Mulk Mohsin-ud-Daula. After Sir Syeds death he became the Secretary of the M.A.O. College in 1899. At a time when Sir Syed had few friends and his demands for funds knew no limits, it was Mehdi Ali who would send him his pay for Sir Syeds publication programme in London.

In matters of raising loans, collecting donations and executing several of Sir Syeds programmes and projects, he worked, as the right hand man of his leader. The Hall has been named after him. The foundation stone of the Hall was laid by the then Vice Chancellor, Mr. Badruddin Tyabji on November 4, 1963. It started with an initial strength of 400 and is now one of the largest residential Halls both in size and strength, having 900 students and six different hostels:
  • Ameen Hostel
  • Allama Shibli Hostel
  • Saifi Hostel
  • Maulana Hali Hostel
  • Maulana Mohd. Ali Johar Hostel
  • Majaz Hostel

Hadi Hasan Hall

Professor Hadi Hasan was born on 3rd September 1869 in Hyderabad. He was a close relative of Mohsinul Mulk. His father, Syed Ameer Hasan was the commissioner in the Hyderabad State and was a prominent landlord. Hadi Hasan received his early education in Hyderabad. A holder of Tripos in Botany from Cambridge, he joined Aligarh Muslim University as Reader and head of the Department of Botany. However, he was destined to distinguish himself as an erudite scholar of Persian, and, therefore, soon sailed to England again. He obtained a doctorate in Persian from the London School of Oriental and Social studies. On return, he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Persian.

He dedicated his life to the cause of Persian language - enriching its literature with his mighty pen, securing for it a place of honour in the curricula of Indian universities and endeavoring for the status of Persian teachers in the country. He had translated Kalidass Shakuntalam into English.

Professor Hadi Hasan was a prolific writer and an orator par excellence. His art of public speaking was not only admirable but also enviable. When Reza Shah Pehalvi of Iran and his Queen Suraiyya visited the University, Professor Hadi Hasan welcomed them on behalf of the students Union. His oration and style of delivery left the shah and his queen spellbound.

So impressed was the king of Iran that in his address, he paid rich tribute to him by saying, Should my college days return, I would deem it a privilege to become a student of Professor Hadi Hasan. Dr Hadi Hasan while attending the Firdausi centenary in Iran, remarked, during the course of his lecture, that there was a time when Firdausi had revived a king but now a king had revived Firdausi. The Shah of Iran, who was presiding over the function, was so pleased that he took off his jeweled cap and put it on Dr Hadi Hasans head. He was decorated with Nishan-e-Danish of the first Order, the highest academic award of Iran. He along with Dr. Sir Ziauddin was instrumental in raising funds of over sixty lakhs for the establishment of the Medical College. Dr. Hadi Hasan was invited to perform the opening ceremony of the Medical College in the old Physics Department by the
then Vice chancellor, Col. B. H. Zaidi. On October 2, 1962, he inaugurated the Medical College. He died on May 23, 1963 and was laid to rest in the University graveyard.
Hadi Hasan Hall was established in the year 1969. Initially, it was meant for medical students only and was a part of R.M. Hall. However, later on, students from other courses were also admitted. Recently, it has been reserved for the medical students. The present strength of the Hall is 421.

Allama Iqbal Hall

Maulana Syed Abul Hasan Ali Nadvi laid the foundation stone of this Hall on August 28, 1984 in the memory of great Islamic thinker and Urdu poet, Mohammad Iqbal, popularly known as Allama Iqbal. He was born in 1876 in Sialkot. At sixteen, Iqbal entered Sialkot's College and was married to Karim Bibi, daughter of a physician. When he was nineteen, Iqbal moved to Government College, Lahore, where he studied with Prof. Arnold, who had left Aligarh's M.A.O. College to join the Lahore College. At Aligarh, Arnold had completed 'The Preaching of Islam', perhaps the first book by a western scholar to note that Islam spread by peaceful means and not by the sword.
Iqbal went to Europe and studied philosophy at Cambridge and Law at London's Lincoln Inn. He also wrote a dissertation on Persian metaphysics on which Munich University awarded him a doctorate. He became a close friend of Sir Ross Masood, grandson of Sir Syed. He profoundly influenced the philosophical and religious outlook of younger generation of Muslims and Hindus through his Urdu and Persian poetry. Allama Iqbal was highly influenced by Sir Syed Ahmed Khan. Sir Syed and Iqbal did a lot to awaken the Muslims of their age out of their deep slumber to the new horizons of the world.

Both the thinkers opposed rigidity and narrow-mindedness. They impressed upon the people that those who follow the tradition strictly, could not be dynamic. According to them, historical background plays an important role in nation building hence there is nothing more disgraceful for a nation than to forget its own history.
Allama Iqbal visited the Aligarh Muslim University on November 24, 1928 and was granted the honorary life membership of the A.M.U. Students' Union.
Allama Iqbal Hall initially was meant for the students of Senior Secondary School and had strength of 510. Later on, it was opened for students of all courses and now has strength of 781.

Aftab Hall

Aftab Hall is named after Aftab Ahmad Khan who was the Universitys second Vice Chancellor. He was one of the most outstanding figures associated with the University. He joined the MAO College when he was eleven year old and studied there till his intermediate in 1891. He then went to Christs College, Cambridge for his higher education and did his B.A. and Barrister-at-Law from Inner Temple in London before returning to India in 1894. Aftab Ahmad Khan made Aligarh his home and started his law practice. But the welfare of the College was always dearest to his heart. Sir Syed recognized Aftab Ahmad Khans attachment to the College and his abilities and in 1894 he made him a Trustee of the College. In 1897, he was appointed Professor of Law in the College. After Sir Syeds death, Aftab Ahmad Khans involvement with the College deepened. He organized the Sir Syed Memorial Fund to raise the College into a University.
Earlier, he had established a new student voluntary organization, the Anjuman Al-Farz or Duty Society. Its purpose was to collect funds to enable poor students to come to Aligarh and to promote the interest of the college within the Indian Muslim community and the country as a whole.
Aftab Ahmad Khan was a distinguished Vice Chancellor of the University from 1924 to December 1926. Although he was pressed to stay on for a further term of three years, he declined due to his frail health. The strains of his enormous responsibilities proved too great and on 18 January 1930, he passed away and was buried in the grounds of the Ahmadi School for the Blind, which he had established in memory of his father Nawab Ghulam Ahmad Khan whose pen name was Ahmadi.
After his death, the A.M.U. Old Boys Association decided to construct a hall of residence in his memory. Mir Wilayat Husain, Maulana Tufail Ahmad Manglori, Deputy Habibullah and Prof. Mohd. Habib were instrumental in collecting large donations for this purpose. Nawab Muzammilullah Khan was the biggest donor. Aftab Hall was established in the year 1932 with an initial intake of 416 students. The present strength is 729. It includes the following hostels.
  •      MacDonnel Hostel
  •      Morrison Court
  •      Aftab Hostel
  •      Mumtaz House

Mohd Habib Hall

Mohammad Habib was born in 1895 at Lucknow in the illustrious family of Mohammed Nasim, a leading advocate; Mohammad Habib studied at the M.A.O. School and College. He topped the B.A. examination of the Allahabad University in 1916. The M.A.O. College was then affiliated to that University. He then proceeded to Oxford for higher studies.

It was there that he received his baptism in nationalism. He was among the organizers of the Oxford Majlis, which he served as president for one term. The ideas of his liberal-minded tutor Ernest Barker, a meeting with Ms. Sarojni Naidu, a reception of Yeasts and the patronage which he received from Mohammad Ali, who visited London those days, played a role in shaping young Habib's ideas. At the call of Maulana Mohammad Ali, Habib returned to India to teach at Jamia Millia Islamia but apparently never became a regular member of its staff. When the non-cooperation movement was called off in 1922, he accepted an appointment as Reader, and almost immediately afterwards as Professor, at the newly chartered Aligarh Muslim University.

In 1926, he won the election of the U.P. Legislative Council as a Swarajist. The next year, he married Sohaila, daughter of Abbas Tyabji a noted disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. Soon after Habib became a great admirer of Jawharlal Nehru and gave a considerable part of his income to the Congress Party.

At Aligarh, Habib made his mark in many ways. As an academician, his great emphasis was on writing history based on original sources, and he encouraged the study of aspects of history other than dynastic or political. He himself wrote on social and cultural history, and painstakingly unraveled the history of Muslim mystics for some of whom he came to cherish an almost personal affection.

In the forties, his interest in Marxism heightened; and in 1952 he presented in a remarkable piece, his introduction to a reprint of Elliot and Dawson's History, Vol. II, an interpretation of early medieval India deeply influenced by Marxist ideas. He visited Paris to represent his country at the UN General Assembly, followed by a trip to Peking (now Beijing) in 1952 on the first goodwill mission from India to People's Republic of China. Both the visits strengthened him in his belief in the need for India to help countries resisting imperialism. He kept nursing the sapling of liberalism in the portals of the University.

He retired in 1958 but was appointed Professor Emeritus. He lost neither his interest in politics nor in research work. He contested for the office of the Vice President of India in 1969 as a candidate of the combined opposition, partly because he was critical of the government policies, and partly because, as he cheerfully told Press Correspondents, he was going to lose. He died on 22 June 1971 following a brief illness.
Mohammed Habib Hall was established in 1972 and was inaugurated by Professor Abdul Aleem, the Vice-Chancellor. The Hall with a number of 375 rooms was originally meant for Research Scholars. With the passage of time, students from various disciplines were admitted. The present strength of the Hall is 925. There are only three hostels:
  • Chakraverty Hostel
  • Umaruddin Hostel
  • Haider Khan Hostel
