Abdullah Hall (for Women)


Abdullah Hall is named after Sheikh Abdullah, the founder of the women's college in Aligarh Muslim University. He was born on June 21, 1874 in a village in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. He received his education at his native village, and then in Jammu, Lahore and Aligarh where he attracted the attention of Sir Syed.

Sheikh Abdullah�s foremost concern was women�s education. With this aim, he started a monthly Urdu Journal �Khatoon� in 1904 and regularly proposed resolutions on this subject at the Muslim Educational Conference.

In November 1906, he started a girls� school with five girls and one teacher at Upper Fort, Aligarh. In 1902 he got married to Waheed Jahan Begum (Ala Bi), who worked as an equal partner in the establishment of the College. Sheikh Abdullah was elected college trustee in 1904 and was a member of the College�s Executive Committee. He served the University in various capacities. He was a member of the University Court from 1920 till his death, a member of the Executive Council from 1920 to 1928 and served as Honorary Treasurer of the University for many terms. He was awarded the title of Khan Bahadur in 1935 and  Padma Bhushan in 1964.He was also a member of the U.P. Legislative Council for some time in 1920s. Both Sheikh Abdullah and Waheed Jahan believed in modern education for women.
Abdullah Hall was named after him. The initial strength of the hall was 57 that rose to 1303 with a gradual increase in the number of hostels. The chronological order of the establishment of the hostels is as follows:
